AI’s capacity to act autonomously should be a cause for concern about giving AI excessive power within biotechnology. Biotechnology has the potential to interfere with the subtle balance of natural ecological systems by introducing genetically modified organisms into natural ecosystems. Furthermore, natural ecosystems are extraordinarily complex and subtle systems of casual interactions. Even with all our current scientific understanding of ecology, we still do not possess a perfect understanding of ecological balance due to our incomplete knowledge of all the species of life existing on earth. AI is even more poorly suited than humans for messing with ecological systems because it excels in understanding correlations yet fails to understand casual relationships. If AI is allowed to autonomously intervene within natural ecosystems, the consequences could be devastating. And because human life is completely dependent on the need for ecological balance, we must proceed with caution when using AI within the life sciences.
